| The Value of Hybrid Flowers |
Everything you need to know about hybrid flowers
A hybrid flower is a cross between two flowers in the same variety but containing different characteristics. Let’s say one particular plant (Plant A) has lots of beautiful flowers but it takes forever for the plant to reach the flowering stage. Another plant (Plant B), in the same genus, grows quite rapidly but its flower production is not as large and beautiful as Plant A. By crossing Plant A and Plant B, you get Plant C. Plant C (the hybrid) should then have the best of both worlds, growing rapidly and producing an abundance of beautiful flowers. Hybridization is genetic re-engineering at work.
A primary hybrid is a combination of, or cross between, two different species. A hybrid can also be “complex” as a result of a cross between one species and a hybrid, or a combination of two hybrids.
Why Create Hybrid Flowers?
Hybrid flowers generally do not reproduce well after the initial mix on their own in the wild. If you were to try to let them reproduce themselves, the natural tendency would be to lean toward the more dominant first generation plant instead of a true cross-mix. Commonly, hybrid plants and flowers are bred to be a stronger, larger variety of plant, with colors that are more intense and blossoms that exceed the size of the first generation flower. The whole idea behind hybrid flowers is to make them better. Many times, hybrid flowers are also more disease-resistant than their predecessors and, therefore, last longer and grow better.
Modern Hybrid Flowers – The Hybrid Tea Rose, Musk Rose, and Orchid
The Hybrid Tea Rose is one modern example of a hybrid flower. This hybrid has even been modified to produce a version without thorns! The Hybrid Tea Rose is a cross between a Tea and a Hybrid Perpetual. Intended cross-pollenization between flowers, among other things, can offer the flower in almost any color imaginable. The flowers on a Hybrid Tea Rose could number petals into the 60s and the one and only blossom at the end of the rose stem could reach five inches across in size. The buds are long and pointed and they slowly uncurl, giving your eyes time to feast upon them. Hybrid Tea Rose plants grow anywhere from three feet to six feet tall. They are fragrant and they are also known to bloom repeatedly throughout the growing season.
The original rose has a long history and is one of the most popular flowers ever sought. It has connotations of love and romance. It’s no wonder flower breeders chose to cross-pollinate this little gem to produce an even greater number of the plants and a greater variety of them.
Breeders of hybrid flowers have many choices and often must experiment for years before a new hybrid is successful enough to release to the general public. These hybrids are tested and tried to make sure the best elements of both crosses transfer over to the new hybrid.
The Musk Rose is another hybrid released fairly recently. This bred rose is said to have “graceful blooms” and have an intense profusion of fragrance. The Hybrid Musk Rose plant can make an exceptional garden shrub as it has a long flowering season and is fairly easy to grow, withstanding some intemperate climates.
While roses are always impressive, so are orchids. There are many varieties of hybrid orchids as well. Orchids are exotic, sensual, and stylish. Over 850 naturally grown orchid genera are known to exist, and there are over 550 manmade (hybrid) varieties.
If you are always on the lookout for something new and different, a hybrid flower or plant is sure to catch your attention soon. New varieties are constantly be tried and tested, and when they are approved and ready to market, you can be among the first to try the new hybrid blend.
